Destructive Chewing: Causes and Solutions

Finding your favorite shoes in pieces is frustrating, but destructive chewing is rarely spite. It's usually a combination of biology and boredom - and it's always fixable.

Why Dogs Chew

Puppies chew to soothe teething pain and explore the world. Adult dogs chew for jaw exercise, anxiety relief, and, most commonly, pure boredom. Sometimes it's simply because a delicious item smells like you.

Prevention Is Half the Solution

Until the habit is broken, manage the environment: keep tempting items out of reach, close doors, and use baby gates. A puppy-proofed space prevents practice of the habit.

Provide Better Alternatives

Stock your home with appropriate chew toys in a variety of textures. Rotate them to keep them exciting. Stuffed Kongs and long-lasting chews give busy jaws an approved outlet.

Mental Exercise Counts: A tired mind is as calm as a tired body. Food puzzle toys and training games burn the mental energy that often fuels destructive chewing.

Never Punish After the Fact

If you discover the damage later, your dog has already forgotten. Scolding creates confusion and fear. Clean up, adjust your management, and focus on positive reinforcement.

With management, alternatives, and plenty of exercise, even champion chewers learn to focus on their own toys.

Your shoes aren't a toy to your dog. Understand why dogs chew destructively and how to redirect it.5
