The Art of Loose-Leash Walking

A slack leash means a relaxed dog - and a relaxed owner. Loose-leash walking is a skill, not a talent, and it's very teachable.

Reframe the Walk

Walks are about your dog's world, but you set the pace and direction. When the leash is loose, your dog gets to explore. When it's tight, everything stops.

The No-Tension Rule

The moment your dog pulls, freeze. Wait for slack. Reward the slack leash with forward motion. Your dog learns that tension pauses the adventure and loose leashes make it continue.

Reward the Good Position

Every few steps, if your dog is walking nicely beside you, drop a treat at your side. This teaches a lovely "heel position" where good things happen.

Reality Check: Sniffing is essential for dogs - let them enjoy smells when the leash is loose. Brisk, no-smell marches are for when you're actually going somewhere.

Practice Without Pressure

Keep early sessions short and in quiet areas. Ten minutes of perfect loose-leash walking beats an hour of pulling. Success builds the habit.

With daily consistency, your walks will become the calm, connected ritual you've been hoping for.
